General Hardware Questions
- What hardware capture products hardware does HDPVRCapture support?
- Will HDPVRCapture work on my PPC G5?
It used to but not any more, sorry.
Less than 1% of the HDPVRCapture customers use PPC based machines. During 2011 I stopped supporting PPC hardware. - Will the G3/G5 playback the recordings?
No, these older machines simply don’t have the raw CPU to decode HD H.264. However, like me you use your G3 as a video server and make those recordings available to other Macs for playback.
- Help! I’m not sure which HDPVR device i own?
Check out our Model Matrix page for HDPVR model information.

Yes, HDPVRCapture monitors and controls the hardware. When HDPVRCapture is disconnected from the HDPVR then it no longer can control it, your video passthrough will likely break after a while.
HDPVR 1212 / HDPVR Gaming Edition Related Questions
- What version of the HDPVRCapture software do I need for the HDPVR 1212?
HDPVRCapture v3.x now carries support for the 1212, both HDPVRCapture v2.x and HDPVRCapture v3.x are available for download here. While both versions are compatible with the 1212 model, we recommend using v3.x.
- What versions of the HDPVR hardware does HDPVRCapture support?
- Jerky MP4 playback – Frames skip / glitch in QuickTime and iMovie (Updated for 2012).
If your 1280x720p MP4 files playback all jerky, play in slow motion or look badly broken, read on. I’m tracking a bug with the 2011 Hauppauge HDPVR firmware that’s causing the issue, it’s Hauppauge’s code inside the HDPVR firmware itself. It’s not something I can fix.The problem occurs with 1280×720 recordings only, but not with 1920x1080i recordings. Hauppauge have resolved the problem in their v1.7.30059 beta driver, I’m calling this new firmware the March 2012 firmware. It’s available for download from here (click on the beta tab).
Check your HDPVR firmware version. Hit record, the drop down panel appears, the date on the first line is the HDPVR firmware date. If you have the October 2011 firmware then this is causing the issue.
You need a Windows PC to upgrade the HDPVR firmware, it’s not possible to do this from the Mac.
If you can’t get access to a windows PC, the alternative is to convert your M2TS files to MP4 using Handbrake on the Mac. It takes longer to turn the M2TS video into MP4 but it’s also an excellent workaround and the resulting files work nicely with iMovie, although they import very slowly and handbrake can take a while to learn.
Or, if all else fails, only record in the 1920×1080 resolution, avoid using 1280x720p if you have no alternative mechanism. (Try the firmware upgrade if you can, it’s by far the best fix for the problem.)
- If you wish to upgrade the HDPVR firmware.
You will need access to a Windows PC.Download the Hauppauge v1.7.30059 drivers from here or here.
1. Extract the zip file to your Windows PC desktop.
2. Connect the HDPVR to your PC using the USB cable and press the power button on the front of the HDPVR so that the small blue LED next to the power switch is illuminated as normal.
3. Windows will detect the HDPVR and may ask for a driver to be installed.
4. Run the HCWDriverInstall.exe application from the extracted files.
5. The v1.7.30059 driver will be installed and the firmware will be automatically upgraded to the 2012 version.
6. The HCWDriverInstaller window should tell you that the process was successful.
7. Wait 60 seconds.
8. Disconnect the HDPVR from the windows PC and reconnect it to your Mac.
9. The next time you record in HDPVRCapture the date on the first line in the drop down window should read 2012 if everything went well. If it still says 2011 (or 2010) then something went wrong and the v1.7.30059 drivers did not install cleanly, you’ll need to repeat the procedure. - Video Error messages appear during recordings.
Video Errors are usually a sign that HDPVR is not very happy about something important, this leads to the HDPVR resetting itself internally and it’s stopped providing HDPVRCapture with video and audio data. It’s usually one or more of the following:
1. Your video signal isn’t supported by the HDPVR. As a test, make sure you set your video signal as 1280×720 and check that HDPVRCapture shows in the lower left, “Video Signal Detected: 1280 x 720″. The HDPVR will support up to 1920x1080i. It does not support 1080p signals. Trying to record 1920x1080p can create this issue.
2. You are using a long USB cable or USB extenders. DO NOT USE LONG USB CABLES. You need to use only the USB cable provided by Hauppauge to connect the HDPVR directly to your Mac. Nothing else. No USB extending hardware. No long cables.
3. You have chosen the SPDIF Optical audio input but the cable is not connected or no data is being passed on the optical cable into the HDPVR.
4. The video signal is missing, glitchy or has changed since you began recording. Perhaps the resolution has changed. Make sure in the lower left hand side of HDPVRCapture that the Video Signal Detection shows your resolution before recording. Some Game consoles can change video resolutions on the fly (PS3 mainly). When this occurs it can trigger this error. Start recording (for example) once the game title has started, not when the PS3 is on the XMedia bar and the title is about to begin.
5. Heat. The HDPVR is sensitive to environmental heat. If your HDPVR is sitting on top of your xbox then move it off, or rotate the HDPVR so it sits on it’s side – causing the heat to rise different. Try to keep the HDPVR as cool as possible. This works for many people.
6. Faulty HDPVR hardware.In 99.9% of all cases it’s 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Very rarely it’s 6.
- Can the HDPVR record 1080p?
No. The hardware is simply not capable.
- Can I use incredibly long USB cables to connect the HDPVR to my Mac?
No. We certainly don’t recommend it, it can lead to hardware instabilities. Use only the cables that came in the box, those cables provided by Hauppauge.
- My VHS video recordings are occasionally corrupt. Why?
Older VHS decks, cameras or consoles often output poor or unstable video timing. These timing fluctuations often confuse the HDPVR 1212 and lead to recording glitches. Symptoms are video images being split across the screen or sliced into pieces and miss-placed in the recordings.
The HDPVR needs a clean and reliable video signal with accurate timing information. You can use a Time Base Corrector device to rectify timing issues if you experience this issue. While we don’t specifically recommend any device, Eric contacted us to report he’s had success with the AV Toolbox AVT-8710 Time Base Corrector from B&H Photo, link here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=orderHistory&A=details&Q=&sku=276891&is=REG.
We hope you find this information helpful.
Audio/Voice Recording Related Questions
- How do i use the Record Microphone feature?
If you click on the Video Controls tab in the app window, in the bottom right corner you will see the Record Microphone feature, simply turn this on and select your headset from the drop down menu.
Please note: Your headset must be connected to your Mac and not your console in order for this feature to work.
After recording, HDPVRCapture will generate a .m2ts.voice.m4a audio file along with the .m2ts video file. It will also add the voice recording to your iTunes library, under the playlist HDPVRCapture Narration.
You then need to convert your video file into .mp4 (this will automatically happen if you have the Post Processing feature switched on), then import it into iMovie. Add your voice over to the video then export it.
There is a video tutorial on our Tutorials page which guides you through the process of using the Microphone Recording feature.
- My headset does not appear in the drop down menu?
Try quitting HDPVRCapture, then restarting the application.
- I have my headset connected, but it’s not recording my commentary!
Make sure your headset is connected to your Mac and not the console. The headset must be connected to your Mac in order for the voice audio to be recorded.
- Are voice recordings automatically added to my iTunes Library?
Yes! HDPVRCapture will also generate it’s own ‘HDPVRCapture Narration’ playlist.
- I’ve deleted the HDPVRCapture Narration playlist from iTunes, what should i do?
HDPVRCapture will automatically recreate a new playlist the next time you use the voice recording feature.
Live Preview Or Passthrough Related Questions
- Watching Live Video During Recording. How do I enable this?
Install VLC onto your computer and HDPVRCapture will use it for live video preview! VLC is an incredible video player for Mac, Linux and Windows. It’s available as a free download from www.videolan.org.
There is a video tutorial on our Tutorials page which guides you through the process of downloading, installing and using VLC with HDPVRCapture.
- The Preview buttons or Monitor Video buttons are greyed out and disabled, I can’t enable them!
- I have a passthrough problem, nothing appears on my TV.
Check the FAQ section that is specific to your product. Most likely this is a hardware specific problem and the dedicated sections for each product can usually help.
Basic Recording and Playback Questions
- QuickTime doesn’t understand the recorded .m2ts files!
- Can I really record HD video and Dolby Digital 5.1 Live or Pre-Recorded TV Shows or Movies from my DirectTV, Dish Network, Cable Company or other set-top-box (STB) to my Mac, then play it back?
Usually Yes. Check the hardware specific sections in the FAQ to be certain.
- Can I use HDPVRCapture to record shows that my DVR has already recorded?
Yes.
- Can I playback these recordings in Quicktime, VLC or burn them to disc (using Toast)?
Yes.
- Can I automate and control the STB using the IRBlaster to change channels automatically?
Yes.
- Can I schedule recordings?
- Can you automatically add recordings to iTunes?
Yes, once the file has been converted into a .mp4. This typically takes 20 seconds for a 30 minute show.
- So I can automate and record all of my HD TV shows easily using HDPVRCapture , TitanTV or Zap2It TV listings?
Yes.
- How do I take a screenshot?
Open the .m2ts recording with VLC, seek to the place in the file and use it to take a screenshot. This works well.
Additionally, if you install VLC then HDPVRCapture can use this to enable a live preview mode, so you can see what you are recording, although it’s a few seconds behind live – if you want to capture screenshots during recordings.
- I have a network of Macs, or a Video server, or a Drobo, can I choose the destination folder for all recordings?
Yes.
- This sounds complicated! Is HDPVRCapture easy to use?
Yes, everything defaults to the most common settings. Just connect the HDPVR, start HDPVRCapture and press record! If you want advanced settings HDPVRCapture has those too, but you don’t need them.
We have video tutorials on our Tutorials page which will help in many aspects of using HDPVRCapture.
- Is HDPVRCapture cool?
Oh Yeah! I worked as a software engineer at Hauppauge Computer Works and they make the HDPVR so I KNOW EXACTLY HOW IT WORKS. I can say for certain that HDPVRCapture is cool!
- After recording a file with either 5.1 or 2 channels AC3 audio, then converting it to .mp4, and trying to open it with the new QuickTime Player X (v10) I get an error: “The Document ‘something.mp4′ could not be opened”.
Quicktime v10 does not appear to have good AC3 support in certain container types.
If you navigate to /Applications/QuickTime Player and Get Info, then change the settings to “Open in 32-bit mode”, all of your .mp4 files should open normally. So, this is starting to sound like an Apple’s 64bit QuickTime issue.Another workaround is to open the file with QuickTime v7.
- Recordings with AAC audio open perfectly in Quicktime Player 10, but AC3 based recordings do not. Why?
See the AC3 comments above.
- When monitoring the CPU’s, and playing back recordings in QuickTime 10 vs QuickTime 7 I don’t see any performance improvements. Why?
Me neither, in my tests v7 was just as fast as v10 on a 8 core MacPro.
- QuickTime Player X is driving me nuts, how do I get back to QuickTime 7?
See this link. Apple provide QuickTime 7 for free, you just have to install it.
- My AC3 audio recordings playback without Audio, I get silence.
I generally encourage customers to record in AAC, not AC3. Apple don’t ship a AC3 decoder by default. You can install Perian from www.perian.org if you need a free AC3 audio decoder.
Scheduling and Automatically Recording
- Can I schedule recordings with HDPVRCapture so I can record Live TV from my DirectTV STB?
Yes.
- How are scheduled recordings triggered?
Great question! Scheduling from v2.9.0 onwards changed slightly, you need to leave HDPVRCapture running in the background so that scheduled recordings may happen. If you close HDPVRCapture then your scheduled recordings will fail to trigger.
- How difficult is it to schedule recordings?
- Do you support my country?
Maybe, if you are in North America then YES. If you need EPG support in another country then email me. I want to hear from you! Remember, you can always manually schedule shows using the Command+N keyboard shortcut, or File/New from the menu.
- I want to schedule recordings using my own software, so can I trigger a recording from iCal, for scheduling purposes?
Yes, see this article. iCal support is native with v3.x.
- How do I schedule a recording from Zap2it.com?
It’s a simple drag’n'drop action!
1. In HDPVRCapture switch to the iCal view.
2. In Firefox or Safari navigate to the zap2it tvlistings grid.
3. Drag and drop the show name into the hdpvrcapture ical view.
4. HDPVRCapture will confirm the details with you.
5. Simply click OK to schedule the recording.(It’s been troublesome lately, if you experience issues then manually schedule the recording using Command+N or File/New from the menu.)
- How do I schedule a recording using TitanTV?
Using your favorite browser navigate to TitanTV.com and create yourself an account and set your zipcode. Now, when you next navigate to the TV grid you will see a red record button for each show.
1. Click this red button and your browser will download a file called ‘program.tvpi’.
2. Go to your downloads folder and Open the file.
3. HDPVRCapture will instantly recognize it and confirm the scheduling details with you.
4. Click OK to schedule the recording. - Can I manage my recording schedule using iCloud?
Yes. By default HDPVRCapture creates its scheduling calendar specifically on your Mac, not in iCloud. It’s created in iCal and the calendar is called ‘HDPVRCapture Recordings’.
In iCal, click the Calendars button to show all of your Calendars on the left. If you delete the HDPVRCapture Recordings calendar from the ‘On My Mac’ section, then manually create a new calendar called ‘HDPVRCapture Recordings’ in the iCloud section of iCal, then iCloud will share this information with all your other iCloud devices.
You will able to schedule a recording from any Mac, anywhere, and through the magic of iCloud, HDPVRCapture will record it. Simply install HDPVRCapture on your other Macs to schedule new recordings.
Capturing from your Set Top Box, Wii, PS3 or other Video Source
- Can I record the output of a XBox360, Nintendo Wii or PS3?
Yes.
- What Video Display Output resolution do you recommend for XBOX360 or PS3?
1280 x 720p. This is a great resolution for the hardware to keep up with, offers the maximum frame rate of 60 frames per second (50 in Europe), and is easy for iMovie and other Mac editors to work with, and avoids many ‘jaggy’ left-to-right motion lines often associated with 1080i interlaced video.
- Can I record Dolby Digital 5.1 with HD H.264 video from my DirectTV, Dish or cable companies STB?
Usually Yes. Check the hardware specific sections in the FAQ to be certain.
- Can I use HDPVRCapture to record live TV from my DirectTV, Dish or cable companies STB?
Yes. Connect the Component cables from the STB to the HDPVR, switch channel on the STB (either manually or automatically using the HDPVR IRBlaster) and press Record on HDPVRCapture. Voila!
- I just want to capture HD for playback on my XBOX or PS3, what resolution is best?
1080i or 720p work equally well, we recommend 1280x720p.
- When I record from the Wii I get odd errors, no video, green video, unstable video or I’m unable to record what-so-ever. A bug?
Sort of. You need to make sure your HDPVR 1212 is running the March 2012 (or higher) firmware. When you press record check the date on the top right, if it’s not May 7th or higher then you’ll need to use a windows machine to upgrade your firmware.
- When on the Playstation’s main screen, 1080i looks great but as soon I start a game the video signal drops to 480p. Why?
The PS3 doesn’t like to run certain game titles at 1080, the PS3 hardware cannot keep up.
It prefers to change the video resolution to something less stressful. If you change your PS3 Display resolution to 720p this often means the PS3 will not switch to 480p, its an easier resolution for the PS3 to work with. - I keep getting a pink/red tint when recording from the Wii U
Try switching from the HDMI cable to the Component video cable, this should fix the problem. We are aware of this issue, it’s on our TODO list.
- The colours on my Playstation 3 are all wrong!
Take a look at our Playstation 3 colour issues page to troubleshoot the problem.
Editing Recordings, Making DVD’s, iTunes, AppleTV, YouTube or Playback support
- Can you edit the recordings in iMovie, Quicktime or Final Cut?
Yes. First, you will need to convert the .m2ts into .mp4.
It should take 30-40 seconds for a typical recording, the resulting .mp4 file can be used with lots of Mac applications. It also produces a logfile in the same folder location if something goes badly wrong. There is a video tutorial on our Tutorials page which guides you through the conversion process.
- Do you have a walkthrough for capturing PS3/XBox360 footage and doing some edit work in iMovie?
Check out DizzyDoug’s awesome tutorial for using and capturing footage from a gaming console using HDPVRCapture, then editing it in iMovie … Thanks Doug!
- Why does is take a massive amount of time to import the .mp4 into iMovie?
It shouldn’t! To speed up the import make sure you DO NOT select Optimize Video on the iMovie import screen.
There is a video tutorial on our Tutorials page called ‘How to convert a .m2ts file into a .mp4 file’ which guides you through the file conversion and import/export process of iMovie. - Can the HDPVR 1212 scale my 480i recordings into 1080i or 720p?
No.
- Are HDPVRCapture recordings compatible with product X, Y, or Z?
I’ve imported recordings successfully into iMovie ’09, MPEG StreamClip v1.9.2, FrontRow (Tested 10.5.6), Final Cut Pro v6.0.5, QuickTime X Player / QuickTime Pro v7.6, they all work fine.
- Can I burn HD DVD’s playable in my Bluray player?
Yes, with the help of Roxio Toast v10.
HDPVRCapture recordings are compatible with Toast and you can easily create HD or Bluray DVD’s. - Can I playback the recordings on an AppleTV?
I’m not sure, maybe if the bitrates are kept low. For AppleTV v1 hardware, try encoding at 2000 kbps and using AAC 2 channel audio. For AppleTV v2 hardware, set the encoder to ‘Constant Bitrate’ 4000 kbps and using AAC 2 channel audio.
- When I playback a .mp4 the audio is fine/mute and the video is green.
Install Perian 1.1.2 then try again.
If you want to specifically use Perian 1.1.3 then read this. You have to change Perians default.
Run this command from the terminal window to re-enable good video on Perian 1.1.3 “defaults write org.perian.Perian DecodeAllProfiles -bool true” (without quotation marks). - Can I use .ts files created by the windows apps with HDPVRCapture post processing?
Yes.
- I can’t get my .mp4 video file to import into iTunes?
Unfortunately, iTunes changes around version 7, stopping the importing of interlaced video content. iTunes 7 onwards can not import 1080i or 480i. You could try using Handbrake to convert the video into something iTunes prefers.
- Can I re-run post processing on a re-recorded file?
Yes, simply drag and drop the .m2ts file into the post processing window, right click and select Run.
- After I import the MP4 to iMovie the video is jerky.
The ‘Optimize’ setting takes significantly longer to import your videos and causes video disturbance. Avoid this setting if you care about importing HDPVR videos into iMovie.
- Can I avoid playback errors in FinalCut after importing MP4?
Yes. FinalCut often imports perfectly good MP4 video then refuses to play it. If you find yourself in this situation then I suggest importing the video into iMovie, then exporting the video into Apple’s ‘Apple Intermediate Codec’ MOV files.
These AIC MOV files are known to import into FinalCut with complete success.
- My AC3 5.1 audio sounds bad when I playback recordings using optical from the Mac to my Receiver.
Try using the Remove DAC3 atom task. Essentially Apple keeps changing it’s mind about how each of the 5 audio channels are laid out in the MOV/MP4 file. Perian, the AC3 audio decoder, which usually decodes the content has various workarounds to try and compensate for Apple’s continued changes. In the latest release of Perian, if it finds the DAC3 atom stored inside the MP4 container, it mangles the audio during playback, putting the wrong audio out on the wrong channels.
This option removes the DAC3 atom from your MP4 files and stops Perian from making a bad playback decision.
Don’t use it unless you know what you are doing.
- If I export from FCP/iMovie to YouTube, the video only plays at 360p? How can I do HD via YouTube?
YouTube offers some good advice when exporting from iMovie or Final Cut Pro, please read their Advanced Encoding Help first. You must export the video from iMovie or Final Cut Pro using the ‘Export Via QuickTime’ option. Use the settings in their encoding document as a guide.
Here’s a sample we made using HDPVRCapture, a HDPVR Gaming Edition earlier this year. The video plays from YouTube in many different resolutions, including HD 720p. Video is here and the comments include any export settings we used. We then manually uploaded the exported video to YouTube using their web based interface, not using the iMovie ‘Share to YouTube’ options.
Network Streaming, UPnP PS3 support and Misc
- Can I use a UPNP media server to playback the recordings remotely on my PS3?
Yes, see this article.
- Can you build a command line interface, I need to be able to script?
No. The HDPVRCapture command line interface was removed in v2.x.
- Can I burn HDPVRCapture recordings to DVD for playback on the PS3 or another BD player?
Yes, but you’ll need Roxio’s Toast V10 with AVC / BD support.
- Can I stream the video during recording from HDPVRCapture to JustinTV or other Flash Encoder sites?
Yes, but it gets a little complicated. You need to use a mixture of tools to do this. It’s not a procedure I use much myself but this does work for many people. You need, HDPVRCapture, VLC, CamTwist, FlashMedia Encoder.
1. Install VLC into your /Applications folder (free download from videolan.org). This allows HDPVRCapture to render video while it’s recording.
2. Test VLC live preview. Start a basic recording in HDPVRCapture then press the preview button, VLC should start and video should appear (4-5 seconds behind live).
3. Switch to the network tab. Uncheck “Store video recordings in your chosen destination folder”.
4. Switch to the network tab. Check “Send the captured video to the network”.
5. Set the recording duration to Infinite.
6. Hit record in HDPVRCapture then press preview. Video should be showing correctly. Stop recording.Install CamTwist, run it. Have it Capture the video coming from the VLC window (when it’s running). CamTwist will create a virtual webcam and expose the HDPVR via through it. Flash Media Encoder will see this new ‘virtual webcam’ and happily use it as a source of video material. FME will now be able to record your HDPVRCaptured video – broadcasting it to JustinTV, or any other supported web service.
This should help, or get you started. Google is also a useful research tool for CamTwist and HDPVRCapture.

- Why does the HDPVR serial number in System Profiler differ to the serial number shown in the HDPVRCapture?
System profiler shows the serial number in hex base 16 format, HDPVRCapture shows the number the way it’s printed on your white product label on the bottom of the HDPVR.

Check your email SPAM folder.
Occasionally your mail application will consider the license key email as junk and either automatically delete it or move it into your SPAM folder. - Can i use my license key on multiple computers?

Customer Support
- I have a question and it’s not on your FAQ, what do I do?
Let us know. Please use the contact page to contact us.
- How often do you release new versions?
The average is once every six weeks.
- I have a problem or a bug, can I contact you for support?
Yes, feel free. Please use the contact page to contact us.
- I sent a question via the Contact page and got no answer, help!
Typically all email is answered the same day, usually within the hour. Often customers enter invalid email addresses into the contact form, so our email responses to them are rejected by their ISPs. This is frustrating for us and you. We’ve often seen the same customer write many times to us, giving the same email address. Every time we respond our emails are refused by gmail, hotmail or some other email provider. You must provide to us a valid and working email address if you’d like an answer to your question. We are happy to respond to any questions but your email address has to be reachable.
If you don’t hear from us, you should assume you entered an invalid email address, in which case please try again.
